Joy in Scripture is not the same as constant happiness. It often sits right beside sorrow, which makes it all the more remarkable.
For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
Psalm 30:5
A day to rejoice
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24
God’s own joy
One of the most surprising verses in the Old Testament pictures God singing:
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17
A habit of gladness
Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
